Avengers: Age of Ultron is Marvelous

It’s finally here. The Marvel Cinematic Universe finally continues with the newest addition, Avengers: Age of Ultron. This has been, without a doubt, the most anticipated movie of the year with the exception of Star Wars Episode 7. I went into the theater absolutely pumped for the experience.  I’ve been a huge fan of these MCU movies; my personal favorites being Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. And while this isn’t the best film in the series, it’s certainly up there and stands as a truly great film.

Avengers: Age of Ultron stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Aaron Taylor- Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen. In this film, Tony Stark (played by Downey) attempts to create a peacekeeping program. When this happens, through many problems, he mistakenly creates Ultron- an artificial intelligence that will stop at nothing to wipe out the human race. It’s up to the Avengers to stop him and end his reign of terror once and for all.

At first, this may seem like your typical Marvel film, and you’d be right. The first thirty minutes or so feels like familiar territory when it comes to Marvel. I’m not saying that it’s bad; it’s just stuff we’ve seen before. However, as the movie goes on, it starts getting deeper, darker, funnier, and more emotional, which is exactly what I was hoping for in this film. It takes all the right turns in the plot to make it even stronger and more memorable as a whole. It’s exactly what the movie needed.

Everyone in the film did a great performance. All the actors really came into their roles and had a lot of fun doing what they do. They also played off each other really well. The chemistry between these people was very fun to watch and it really looked like they were all close friends with each other. It was definitely one of the strongest aspects of the film.

Another one of the best things was the script. Director Joss Whedon is a master at writing dialogue to pertain to many characters at the same time, and it certainly shows here. The writing is very witty and clever throughout, with many laugh out loud moments. Everything from the big, recurring jokes to the minor things that you don’t really think about are really funny. The script was done exceptionally well.

Something that’s also done exceptionally well are the action scenes. Every single battle is breathtaking, with amazing visuals, beautiful cinematography, and an epic score. At times, it does feel like there’s a little too much going on at once, but those moments are few and far between. The battles are big, fast paced, intense, action packed, and just a blast to watch.

That being said, the biggest problem with this movie is the pacing. There’s a lot going on in this one, and because of this, it causes the film to gloss over a few parts. There were some moments that definitely feel rushed, especially with Ultron’s development, and some moments that didn’t make that much sense. I’m not going to spoil what, specifically, but those moments are definitely in there.

But hey, at least Ultron’s awesome! As much as I love the MCU, they don’t have too many memorable villains. Sure, there’s Loki and The Winter Soldier, but that’s about it. But now we have Ultron and he is so cool. Not only is his design awesome and James Spader’s voice work really suit the character, but he is also a menace. He is truly a threatening villain. Not only that, but he brings a lot of deep thinking subjects to the table, which just adds to the overall story of the film. Ultron is one of the best villains in the series.

I love Avengers: Age of Ultron. It has a great blend of comedy, action, drama, and visuals to make an overall awesome experience. Is it as good as some of the other Marvel movies? I personally don’t think so, but it’s one of the better ones. As of right now, it’s probably my 4th or 5th favorite MCU movie. If you’re a fan of this series, you’re going to love it. Avengers: Age of Ultron is a movie of super proportions.

I give Avengers: Age of Ultron a 9 out of 10. This was a great way to kick off the summer movie season.
