Bixby High School has had its share of bad flu cases this winter, but it hasn’t had to shut down because of high absenteeism, which has led other Green Country schools to call off classes on occasion.

This season’s flu has been deadly: 92 people have died across the state, including 15 in Tulsa County, with more than 2,000 hospitalized, according to state health officials.

Bixby High has had at least 26 confirmed cases of flu, principal Terry Adams said to faculty members recently. School nurse Tory Kraus said she has seen more many flu cases this year compared.

“It’s been hard compared to other years,” she said. “It is strange that this is common.”

Ms. Kraus offers documented advice on how to avoid the flu or what to do if you have the flu.

“Get the flu shot, stay home [if you’re] sick, do handwashing, avoid touching your face,” she said. “Keep yourself healthy.”

State health officials have said the high number of deaths and hospitalizations makes it the worst flu season since they started tracking such statistics.
