Headlines from Week 9

Florida was taken to bits against top-ranked Georgia in Jacksonville on Saturday. After the stunning 42-7 defeat, Florida mutually split ways with head coach Jim McElwain after the Gators lost their last three games.

Iowa State is this season’s surprise with victories over two Top 5 opponents.

Iowa State remains the king slayer so far this season after defeating Oklahoma last month and highly ranked Texas Christian this past week. The Cyclones, 6-2 overall, are tied with OU, Oklahoma State and TCU atop of the Big 12 Conference at 4-1. Iowa State has a tough schedule ahead, but don’t count the Cyclones out.

Sam’s Heisman rankings

  1. Saquon Barkley, Penn State: He is the most talented running back we have seen in a while. He has rushed for almost 1,000 yards this season, but he had just 44 yards and a touchdown in a heartbreaking loss at Ohio State last weekend.
  2. Baker Mayfield, Oklahoma: Mayfield has clearly become the best quarterback in college football with 2,628 passing yards and a completion percentage rating of 72.5.
  3. Bryce Love, Stanford: Love, college football’s leading rusher, has two more touchdown runs this season than Barkley.
  4. J.T. Barrett, Ohio State: After a slow start to the season, this quarterback has finally arrived on the scene. After Ohio State’s 39-38 victory over then-No. 2 Penn State, he jumped the Buckeyes back into College Football Playoff contention. He shredded the Nittany Lions’ defense with four TD passes and 328 passing yards.
  5. Josh Adams, Notre Dame: The Irish have been a sleeper all year until the last couple of weeks. Notre Dame’s return to elite status is because of Adams, its star running back.

Week 10 preview

ESPN’s College Gameday will come to Stillwater for the Bedlam matchup between OU and Oklahoma State. This game will feature a battle of offenses; Cowboy Mason Rudolph and Sooner Baker Mayfield should showdown for the ages. Oklahoma has dominated this rivalry through the years, but do not underestimate the Cowboys.

Alabama has dropped from No. 1 ranking after Georgia topped the Crimson Tide in the first College Football Playoff rankings. All of the other polls, however, have Alabama remaining at the top. Both UGa and Alabama have been exceptional throughout the year in showing little to no mercy with opponents. They should meet in the Southeastern Conference championship next month.
