Dee Harris - Bixby Public School's Director of Communication, Broadcast and Journalism Instruction, SPN Adviser and Senior Class Adviser.

When I was seven, I wrote and illustrated my first book. It was about a dog. The illustrations looked a lot like Charles Schultz's snoopy because I was, and still am, a collector of all things Peanuts.

When I was eight I started riding horses. I trained hard and when I was a junior in high school became a National Qualifier in Saddle Seat Equitation. I rode, taught riding and trained horses. This life-love I still carry with me. I transitioned into dressage and rode with Walter Farley, author of the Black Stallion and trained under Chuck Grant (the father of American Dressage).

I started college at Oklahoma State University as a journalism major, but quickly shifted my focus to English because of the incredible influence of three professors -- Paul Klemp, Peter Rollins, and David Shelley Berkeley (oh the power of an influential teacher). I also loved sociology so much that it became by minor.

After graduation did many things before becoming a teacher. I was a creative director, graphic designer, multimedia producer, marketing communications specialist and a mother to two amazing kids. I joined Bixby High School's staff in 2010 and I have worked hard to grow the journalism department creating curriculum for Journalism One, Online Newspaper Production, Video Production and Sports Broadcasting.

I was lucky enough to start my career in a journalism and technology-based field -- a computer company in Wichita Kansas that developed software for the newspaper publishing industry. While there, I worked with newspapers all over the United States, designing and writing informational and training material to help newspapers go from cut and paste to electronic pagination and design. Teaching was always in my blood.

After that I began freelancing, working with clients in New York, North Carolina, Virginia, Oklahoma and Kansas. I am Tulsa Zoo penguin artist, creating four penguins for the initiative, and is the illustrator for the book No One Is Too Old To Learn: Neuroandragogy: A Theoretical Perspective on Adult Brain Functions and Adult Learning.

I hold teaching certifications in English and Journalism, wanting to share my passion for writing, creative confidence, photography, videography, design and storytelling.

I have served on the Oklahoma Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA) committee to redevelop the journalism Certification Examinations for Oklahoma Educators, the Oklahoma Advisory Board for the Journalism Education Association and the Southern Interscholastic Press Association and as the curriculum adviser for OKPreps TV where I wrote the curriculum guide, Sports Broadcasting and Video Journalism. I am a member of the Assembly for Advisers of Student Publications (an assembly of National Council of Teachers of English), the National Scholastic Press Association and the Public Relations Society of America.

I have been an guest speaker at Rogers State University Oklahoma State University.

I'm always learning. I studied with the Academy of Scholastic Broadcasting in 2014, the Intensive Journalistic Writing Institute in 2011 and 2012 at The Washington Post and The Boston Globe and I am the 2012 recipient of the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism, Oklahoma Scholastic Media Grant Initiative.

In 2015, I was taken aback when I received the honor as Bixby High School's Teacher of the Year and Oklahoma Scholastic Media's state Journalism Teacher of the Year.
